JAMMU, Jan 28: New tunnels at Nandni on way from Jammu to Udhampur were also thrown open for vehicular movement today.
With this,   all new four tunnels from T-1 to T-4 in Nandni Wild Life Area have become functional thus facilitating smooth ride for commuters on four-lane Jammu-Udhampur National Highway.

The old road  in Nandni Wild Life area from toll plaza to JKTDC is about  6.8 km length having poor geometry, sharp curve , hair pin bends and steep grades whereas the new alignment through series of bridges and tunnels has a  length of 3.6 km only.
Tunnel T-1 at Nandni is 187 m in length while T2, T3 and T4 have the length 230 m, 474 m and 559 m, respectively.
All tunnels are properly illuminated and have 2-lane 7.50 m carriageway with footpath on either side.
Tunnel T-4 has ventilation system to ensure pure air supply and a cross passage from left tube to right tube.
There are 5 bridges in between; one bridge between T-1 and T-2 has the height of about 52 m, highest in the project.
According to the sources, the Toll Plaza ahead of Nandni is also likely to be operationalized  within days.
