Court orders inquiry into recovery of medicines worth lakhs of rupees

Srinagar, Jan 31: The District and Sessions Judge, Baramulla, Shujaat Ali Khan, who is also the Chairman District Legal Services Authority Baramulla today ordered inquiry into the recovery of medicines worth lakhs of rupees from the house of a member of an NGO that was meant for the distribution among flood victims.
The chairman directed the Judicial Magistrate Boniyar to conduct an inquiry into the matter by associating the NGO in the process. “He shall be at liberty to initiate criminal proceedings against the delinquent person or persons if need arises and shall submit the report to this authority accordingly”, he added.
The chairman Legal Services Authority Boniyar recovered and seized medicines worth lakhs of rupees from the house of one Mukhtar Ahmad Sheikh. The medicine was provided to Sheikh for the distribution among the flood victims by ANHAD NGO of which he is a member.
The District and Sessions Judge Baramulla directed formation of a committee headed by chairman Tehsil Legal Services Authority Boniyar and comprising Block Medical Officer Boniyar and SDPO Boniyar. The committee has been directed to break the seal of the cartons containing medicine and prepare an inventory.
The committee has been directed to keep the medicine at the disposal of the District Magistrate Baramulla for its distribution among flood victims. The committee has been also directed to ascertain whether the consignment is free from any banned or expired drug.
The district chairman has also directed all the tehsil level chairmen of the district to monitor the activities of NGOs working in their areas. “…and if they feel any material arranged by any NGO/Agency has been misappropriated or stored at somewhere with malafides, they shall proceed ahead in the matter so that any such event is not repeated in any other area”, the order reads.
