SRINAGAR, Feb 7: Police today detained scores of daily wagers of Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department after they tried to take out a protest march demanding regularization of their service.
Scores of daily wagers assembled in Partap Park this afternoon and tried to march towards city center, Lal Chowk. But a heavy contingent of police deployed on the road thwarted their attempts to march ahead.
The police asked them to disperse and not to move forward but the protesters persisted to move ahead while raising slogans for their demands.
Police bundled dozens of the agitated dailywagers into their vans and took them into preventive custody in a nearby police station.
The protest was called by Kashmir PHE Joint Employees Association in support of its demand for regularization of daily-wage workers, casual labourers and need-based workers.
“We will not give up until our demands are met. In fact we will intensify our agitation if our genuine, long-pending demands are not addressed immediately,” the protestors said.
The protesters accused the previous Government of playing with their livelihood.
