JAMMU, Feb 21: A one-day National Seminar on “Socio-Economic Perspective on Scheduled Caste Women in India: Issues and concepts”, organized by Sai Shyam College of Education in collaboration with ICSSR, New Delhi was inaugurated at College Campus in Ghou-Manhasan, here today.
Sukhnandan Choudhary, Member Legislative Assembly was the chief guest, while Prof Desh Bandhu, Director CDC, University of Jammu was the guest of honour.
The programme began with the lighting of the traditional lamp by the chief guest and other dignitaries.
In his inaugural address, Sukhnandan lavished praise on the College Management for organizing this all important Seminar on Dalit women and said that dalit men should be educated first so that they do not oppress their female folk, adding that we should live with Scheduled Caste people to understand them better.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Deshbandhu, while expressing happiness in participating in the academic activities of the College, said that dedication of College towards the students is excellent and excellence in the quality education should also be maintained.
Prof Abha Chouhan, Head Department of Sociology, University of Jammu in her address said that we can bring social transformation in the society only when we disaggregate the caste data, adding that people should try to understand schedule caste women from their point of view.
Prof R L Bhat, Head Department of Economics, Central University of Jammu in his keynote address highlighted the reasons for the backwardness of Dalit women and said that the Dalit women are deprived as far as health and education attainments are concerned.
Earlier, Dr Usha Tickoo, Principal of the College in her welcome address highlighted the achievements of the College and dwelt on the broad contours of the Seminar, while C L Tickoo, chairman, College Management Committee presented mementos to the chief guest and the other dignitaries.
The proceedings of the inaugural session was conducted by Shubha Misra, while Dr J L Raina presented vote of thanks.
The inaugural function was followed by first technical session. Prof. Abha Chouhan was the chairperson of the first Session and 15 delegates presented their papers.
Another parallel technical session was chaired by Dr JN Baliya, Deptt. of Educational Studies, Central University of Jammu.
Eight delegates presented papers. Prof. Ajit Angral Principal Govt. College of Education chaired the second session were 15 papers were presented while as the parallel session was chaired by Prof. Darshana Sharma, Prof. of Education, Directorate of Distance Education, University of Jammu were 12 participants presented their papers. More than 50 papers were presented by the participants and delegates in all.
At the Valedictory Session Prof. Mubarak Singh, Dean and HoD Education Department, University of Jammu was the chief guest and Prof. Meenakshi Kilam, Director IQAC, University of Jammu was the guest of honour.
