‘Wait-n-watch’ ; Sonia suggests media on Rahul’s elevation

NEW DELHI, Feb 26: Amid growing speculation over elevation of Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi as party President, AICC supremo Sonia Gandhi today suggested to the media for ‘wait and watch’ approach.

“When Rahul will be made the President of the party, everyone will be informed,” a TV news channel quoted Ms Gandhi as saying here.

There have been speculation for some times that Mr Gandhi could be made the party chief later this year may be in a couple of months when the next AICC convention is held sometime in March or April.

The speculation gained momentum when two influential party functionaries– party general secretary Digvijay Singh and former Union Minister Kamal Nath– made crucial comments on the leadership and fate of the Nehru Gandhi family scion.    Mr Singh in an interview with a TV channel last night had said “Rahul Gandhi would emerge as a strong leader (read as strong as his uncle Sanjay Gandhi)”.

“There is no opposition from the party members for his promotion,” he said.

The AICC General Secretary said, “I don’t know of any opposition for Rahul in the party, but then in which party people don’t have difference of opinions. But, I don’t think there is any resistance as such for Mr Gandhi to take up the leadership.”   Another key party functionary and former Union Minister Nath exceeded a step ahead demanding handing over of the command to the junior Gandhi.

In another interview last night only, Mr Nath said Congress is falling in confusion between Mr Gandhi and Ms Gandhi.   “When I go to Sonia with a problem, she says please go to Rahul Gandhi. When I go to Rahul Gandhi, he says the Congress president will resolve (the issue),” he said.   “We need to give Rahul full charge. Let him form his own team. We will soon find out if he can even do the job or not,” he said.

“You cannot judge someone while he hasn’t been given full charge. Once Rahul is in-charge, he will himself know whether he is up to the challenge or not,” Mr Nath added. (AGENCIES)
