5 distts plunge into darkness

JAMMU, Apr 2: Five districts of Jammu province tonight plunged into darkness following a technical snag in the Salal Hydroelectric Project.
Official sources told EXCELSIOR that during heavy rains in Reasi district tonight, a technical snag was developed in the yard of the Salal Hydroelectric Project snapping the power supply to Gladni Grid Station, which is supplying power to major parts of Jammu province.
“As it was raining heavily, the authorities of NHPC could not start operation to rectify the snag as a result of which five districts of Jammu province—Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri and Poonch plunged into darkness”, they said while expressing inability to specify the time-frame for rectification of snag.
Though efforts were made to provide power supply to the affected districts from Sarna (Punjab) line but due to certain constraints major parts of five districts remained without power supply, they said.
When contacted, Development Commissioner Power, Asgar Ali confirmed snapping of power supply to five districts of Jammu province, adding NHPC authorities have assured to start fault rectification operation soon after improvement in weather conditions.
He, however, said that efforts would be made to provide supply to the affected districts through Sarna line on rotational basis.
