Need to introduce job-oriented courses: Priya

JAMMU, Apr 16: Minister of State for Information, Education and Culture, Priya Sethi today stressed the need for introducing job-oriented courses in educational institutions to enhance employability of educated youth.
The Minister was speaking at a symposium on, “Semester System at Undergraduate Level” organized by Government College for Women Parade.
Emphasizing on fine-tuning skills of the students, the Minister said priority should be given to job-intensive courses particularly in higher education sector. She said the colleges should introduce more technical courses to equip their students with the requisite skills so that they can meet the requirement of the private sector.
“Students should be imparted applied knowledge, rather than bookish,” she said.
The Minister said that the objective of the education system should be to create entrepreneurs, innovators, artists, scientists, thinkers and writers who can lay the foundation for knowledge based society and economy.
Underscoring the need for greater synergy between different institutions for pooling their resources, infrastructure and expertise to progressively enhance the quality of education, the Minister  said that this would go a long way in preparing youth to compete successfully in the competitive job market.
Describing semester system a proactive and practical step, she said that the semester system was the need of hour and a very effective tool as it engages both faculty and students throughout the year in academic activity besides facilitating more chances to improve.
Students from various colleges including GCW Gandhi Nagar, SPMR College of Commerce, GGM Science College, GDC RS Pura, GDC Kathua, GCW Kathua, GDC Boys Udhampur and GDC Khour participated in the symposium.
Kunal Saini of GGM Science College won the first prize., while Sumit Sharma of GDC RS Pura bagged the second prize while third prize went to Sabah Sarwar of GCW Gandhi Nagar.
Among others Principal GCW Parade, Prof Hema Aggarwal, Prof Kiran Bakshi, Prof Chanchal Dogra, Dr Monika Sethi, besides faculty members and large number of students were present on the occasion.
