JAMMU, Apr 26: The breakaway began like so many others during the first five games of Oakton’s season, an open opportunity and seemingly spot-on shot thwarted by the outstretched hands of the goalie.
Had the Cougars settled there, allowing the final 13 seconds to tick away in the first half of the matchup with Herndon, odds are their three-game winless skid would have continued.
But with her back to the scoreboard’s expiring clock and an open net in front of her, Shweta Dixit swooped in along the right side and knocked the deflected ball back into the goal.
The score reversed the momentum of game and, perhaps, of Oakton’s season, serving as the first of three unanswered goals in a 3-2 win in Herndon.
“In the last few games, we haven’t really finished the ball well,” Dixit said. “Once we scored that goal right before halftime, it really pumped us and got us going for the second half.”
