SRINAGAR May 20: Around thousand female students from various Government and Private Schools of Srinagar participated with zeal and zest in the competitions of Badminton, Wushu, Judo, Taekwondo, Sqay and other sports disciplines at the famous Indoor Stadium, here.
The Badminton tournament for girls will conclude tomorrow, while the Badminton Competitions in boys section will be conducted from May 22 on the same venue.
The participating girl students were of different age groups and weight categories.
The sports event is being organized by the Department of Youth Services and Sports, under the patronage of its newly appointed Director General, Jehangir Mir, who took over the charge, here today.
While expressing happiness over the mass participation of girl students in such sports events, Mr Mir stressed upon the parents of the girls to encourage their talented daughters and let them prove their mettle in the field of sports.
Terming the huge participation of girls in sports events a welcome step, Mr Mir said that in the present era girls are at par with boys in every field, not to talk of the field of sports only.
Meanwhile, after taking over the Charge, Mr Mir took stock of the repair and maintenance work at Youth Hostel Srinagar and building of the Directorate Office.
He expressed shock over the maintenance of the Youth Hostel and said the renovation work of the hostel should have been completed on fast track basis, after it was badly hit by the floods last year.
Mir visited each room of the Directorate Office and expressed dismay over the repair work done after the devastating floods last year.
He directed the Engineering wing of J&K Sports Council and the officials of Youth Services and Sports Department to put in every possible effort in making Youth Hostel Srinagar functional within the shortest possible time.
