Interaction between Surgeons, patients held at SKIMS

SRINAGAR, June 8: Interaction between Colorectal surgeons and  colon & rectal cancer patients who have stoma ( an opening on abdominal wall for passage of stools) after surgery was held at SKIMS today.
The experts discussed complexities and social stigma involved in stoma. The patient-meet was organised by the department of Stoma therapy headed by Nursing Supervisor HaseenaWani.
Dr. Harikesh Buch colorectal surgeon of International repute, gave detailed lecture on Ostomy life in which patient faces lot of psychological distress. He said stoma is life changing experience  & psychological & social battle for the patient where he/she loses bowl & bladder control besides fighting cancer &disfigurement.  He advised patients to develop positive image and stressed for acceptance and self-care. He stressed for healthcare professional training  who play a key in handling such patients.  He appreciated specialist of SKIMS & nursing staff for providing adequate treatment and care to these patients.
Leading Colorectal Surgeon & Associate Professor  Dr. Fazal Q. Parray , from the department of General  surgery shared his personal experiences with cancer patients  and appreciated  Dr. Zargar for his support & placement of advancedequipment for carrying laparoscopic surgeries  which has made surgical procedures easy and patient friendly.
Director SKIMS Dr. Showkat Zargar said ostomy is seen as a social problem and stressed for ostomy association. He also offered all possible help to these patients through cancer society and SKIMS administration.
Dr. Harikesh also donated bags to patients , who is an ostomate himself and operated 40 years back for rectum cancer. Dr. Gul Javid, Dean Academics also spoke on the occasion.
