JAMMU, July 15: Going by the stirred-up creative emotions and wholehearted response of the participants attending the on-going Theatre Workshop on Design and Techniques, at the K L Saigal Hall, there is no doubt that first of its kind technical workshop held by National School of Drama, New Delhi, in the winter capital, will go a long way in giving a fillip to theatre movement in the winter capital.
Organized in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, the 20-day workshop which started on June 30 at the K L Saigal Hall, is being attended by 22 young participants drawn from various drama clubs and folk theatre groups of Jammu and Kashmir divisions.
The workshop being coordinated by strict disciplinarian renowned designer, director Bapi Bose, along with lectures by invited outside faculty comprising of leading nationally and internationally acclaimed experts and practitioners of theatre, has not only introduced to young and mostly amateur theatre workers to academic underpinnings of various technical departments of theatre but also prepared them through practicals, to apply them in their future theatre ventures.
Umesh Singh from Rangshala Jammu, said that for amateur theatre actors and directors like us hailing from peripheral centers like Jammu, the workshop has come as a life time opportunity. It has not only made us to observe things around us with new eyes but also prepared us for active use of imagination in our future drama productions.
Sandeep of Amateur Theatre Group Jammu, said that the systematic orientation to various aspects of theater production such as stage designing, lights, sound, make-up and poster designing along with model making, evolution of performing space and production mounting, has given us a new confidence to stage plays.
Other than masterly discourses by Camp Director Bapi Bose on set design & model making, production mounting, the participants were especially excited after attending technical lectures of experts from outside like Souti Chakraborty-performance space, light design, Kirti V Sharma-costume design, Prof Mahendra-posters & graphics, Arun Malik-mask & properties, make-up, K Manoharan- sound design, M K Raina-production mounting and Barun Kar–design diary.
The lectures by local historians and theatre experts such as Prof Rekha Choudhary, Dr Lalit Gupta, Kavi Rattan, Makhan Lal Saraf, Deepak Kumar, Mushtaq Kak, Ifra Kak Dr Sudhir Mahajan about heritage, inclusive plural culture and history and practice of theatre in J&K also was an eye opener, the participants said.
Bapi Bose, the camp director of the workshop, while feeling satisfied about the workshop which has given a new vision to the participants, lamented the dismal lack of performance spaces in the winter capital where these young amateur theater enthusiasts could put in to action what they have learnt in the workshop. He was thankful to J&K Cultural Academy for full hearted support and co-operation in organizing a successful workshop.
