Highway connecting Ladakh with Kashmir reopens

SRINAGAR:Traffic on 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway, connecting the Ladakh region with Kashmir, was today resumed after remaining suspended for two days due to landslides, triggered by cloudburst and heavy rain.
”We allowed traffic and only stranded vehicles were being allowed to move towards their respective destinations,” a traffic police official said here today.
He said the highway was still damaged at some places where only one vehicle is allowed at a time on this side of the Zojilla pass.
The highway was closed on July 17 following landslides, triggered by cloudburst and heavy rain in Kullan area of Gund tehsil on this side of the Zojila pass. Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying essentials for Ladakh region and passengers, were stranded on the highway at different places on either side of the Zojila tunnel.
Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, supported by the Army put through the highway after more than two days. Closure of the highway in Gund area, short of Baltal base camp affected Amarnath yatra. (AGENCIES)
