Khrew residents up in arms against cement factories

SRINAGAR, July 24: The residents of Khrew area of Pampore in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district have called for three day shutdown commencing from tomorrow against the pollution caused by local cement factories.
The call for shutdown on July 25, 26 and 27 has been given collectively by Civil Society Khrew, Auqaf Islamia and Saffron Truck Union.
The residents told Excelsior that the third time in last three months that they are going to protest against these “illegal” factories which have become nuisance for them. They said that despite repeated requests to authorities including Pollution Control Board, Geology and Mining, and Forest and Wild life Department, they have not paid any attention.
“The pollution has made our lives terrible. The authorities are silent and no one among them is ready to act against these factories,” the residents said, adding: “so, in order to register our protest again, we are observing shutdown for three consecutive days from Saturday.”
