NEW DELHI, Aug 4: A deputation of 1984 riot victims today called on Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh and sought his intervention for early redressal of their grievances which, they said, had remained unattended even after 31 years.
President of “All India Riot Victim Committee” , S. Kuldeep Singh Bhogal submitted a memorandum to Dr Jitendra Singh listing various demands and pending issues in the aftermath of the unfortunate happenings of 1984 which, according to him, led to the killing of 3,000 members of Sikh community in the capital city of Delhi alone. Next to Delhi, maximum number of killings took place in Kanpur where 300 members of the community lost their lives, he alleged.
The memorandum noted that an amount of Rs. 5 lakh per family of the deceased, as promised by the Government, is yet to be distributed to many families.
The deputation also demanded one Government job each for the families of the deceased. They also alleged that in Kanpur riots, 27 FIRs had been lodged and guilt proven but so far, no prosecution had taken place.
The memorandum also stated that the Delhi High Court order to provide Rs. 1.25 lakh for the rehabilitation of the 1984 riot victims had also not been honoured. The entire Sikh community was feeling aggrieved by the delay in redressal of their grievances.
Dr Jitendra Singh gave a patient hearing to the members of the deputation and assured them that he will put up the issue before the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and other concerned Departments for perusal.
In addition to Kuldeep Singh Bhogal, other prominent members of the deputation included Ravinder Singh Khurana, Inderjit Singh Captain, Darshan Singh and Paramjit Singh Chandok.
