Congress to continue to champion rights of people: Sonia

NEW DELHI : Congress President Sonia Gandhi today paid homage to martyrs and reiterated her party’s resolve for continuing to champion the right of people and uphold aspirations of freedom fighters.
In a message, Ms Gandhi said, “On the occasion of 73rd Anniversary of Quit India Movement, I join the nation in paying homage to all the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for an Independent India”. “Hoisting of the National Flag at the AICC session marked the formal beginning of this movement…the Quit India Movement was a defining moment in India?s Freedom Struggle as a nation rallied under a single flag with the sole objective of complete independence,” she said.
‘Gandhi ji?s clarion call Do or Die- became the wings of this powerful movement…these three words galvanised the nation and catalysed the dismantling of colonial rule.
The colonial administration used the most brutal means to supress this movement and muzzle the voice of the nation. The Congress party was declared as an unlawful organisation, several freedom fighters became the victims of illegal police shootings and several more were arrested. But the indomitable will of the nation exceeded the brute strength of the oppressors, she recalled. The Quit India movement was a people?s movement and an exemplary evidence of the people?s power. Women, students, farmers, workers and all other sections of the society across the country contributed to the success of this movement.
”Having been closely associated with this movement, the Congress party shall continue to champion the rights of the people and uphold the aspirations of our freedom fighters,” the Congress chief promised. (AGENCIES)
