SRINAGAR,  Aug 20: Describing BJP-PDP coalition as a complete failure, leaders of All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC), Shafiq Mir today said that Panchayati Raj Institutions(PRIs) have been made complete defunct by the present Government.
While addressing a press conference here today he said that the present coalition Government of two different parties have not only exploited the religious sentiments of the people of the State for the sake of power but have also exploited the ‘good governance and developmental slogan’ as well. The Panchayat leaders also warned of State level agitation in near future for which the date will be announced separately.
Giving details of the functioning and present status of PRIs in the state Ghulam Hassan Panzoo, spokesman of the organization said that the Panchayat bodies in the State have been made complete defunct since the new dispensation took place by snatching  even the existing powers conferred to these local bodies by the previous Government. He said both the parties would speak loudly in favour of panchayats and other local bodies when they were in opposition but have done nothing since they came to power.
Bashir Ahmed Mir an another senior leader of Panchayat Conference said that the previous Government had at least given them monitoring powers of 14 departments, but instead of making the institution more powerful as promised by these parties they have even snatched the monitoring powers from them and they are not being consulted in any of the government activity in their area of responsibility and jurisdiction as per JKPR act 1989 .
Describing the present Government a complete failure and against the expectations of the people, he said that the Panchayat leaders will not see the situation as mute spectator but will come on streets soon . Similar views were expressed by an senior panchayat leader Ghulam Mohidin Yatoo.
While describing the present government a failure and exploiting people on communal  and sentimental issues, the Panchayat leaders said that the parties presently governing the State have not only exploited the communal sentiments of the people during elections even both the parties have divided the administrative system of the State on communal lines which is dangerous for the future of the State.
They said that the appointment of officers in Jammu and Kashmir regions on key posts indicates that both the parties have divided the State and it will have dangerous consequences in future. ” Being a community leaders at grass root level it is our responsibility to check these things”, they said adding that  both these parties had made ties in the name of development but the fact is that no developmental work was going in any area of the State even the flood victims of the State were still waiting for compensation.
