Kashmir remains cut off, Leh highway, Mughal road through

SRINAGAR: The Kashmir valley remained cut off from the rest of the country as 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway remained closed for the second day today due to landslides, triggered by rains.
Despite rain, the highway, connecting the Ladakh region with the Kashmir valley and historic Mughal road remained through despite snowfall.
Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, remained stranded at different places on the highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country.
Official sources said Border Roads Organisation (BRO) responsible for the maintenance of the highway has already pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the highway.
Heavy rains triggered landslides at different places, particularly between Ramban and Ramsu areas, forcing authorities to suspend the traffic.
Vehicles, including those carrying passengers, which left Jammu yesterday morning, are stranded at different places, including at Ramban.
Similarly vehicles, which left Srinagar yesterday, are also stranded at Banihal, Qazigund and other places.          Officials said if weather remains dry and there is no more landslides, the highway will be put through later today.        However, only stranded vehicles will be allowed to move towards their respective destinations before allowing fresh traffic from Jammu or Srinagar, they said.
Despite snowfall at Sempthan, the historic Mughal road, connecting the Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region remained through. Traffic was disrupted for some hours yesterday due to snowfall which was immediately cleared.
The 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway was also through despite rain. (UNI)
