Woman dies after setting herself ablaze; husband, in-laws arrested

Srinagar, Sept 28: A 34- year old woman in Khanyar area of downtown city who had allegedly set herself ablaze last week on Eid day succumbed after which police arrested her husband and in-laws.
Police said the woman (name withheld) tried to end her life by setting herself on fire in Kaw Mohalla locality of Khanyar here on last week Friday after being allegedly harassed by her in-laws over dowry.
The woman was immediately rushed to SMHS hospital for treatment where she succumbed to her injuries triggering protests.
The relatives of the deceased women along with locals staged massive protests against her in-laws at Ishber in Nishat area of city outskirts and sought punishment for them.
Meanwhile, police have arrested her husband, two sister-in-laws and mother-in-law of the deceased woman. A case under FIR number 63/2015 under Sections 306, 309, 498A has been registered against the accused and investigations are on, said a police officer.
Condemning the Khanyar incident, the CPI (M) leader and legislator Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami today demanded speedy investigations into the incident so that the culprits are brought to justice. He said that the discriminatory attitudes toward women enforce abusive behavior and make it easier for a society to condone violence against women.
