J&K blanks Haryana in opening tie of Postal Football Tourney

SRINAGAR, Aug 25: N N Vohra, Governor Jammu and Kashmr, inaugurated a 5-day All India Postal Football Tournament at Bakhshi Stadium, here today.
On the opening day of All India Postal Football Tournament at Bakshi Stadium hosts Jammu and Kashmir emerged victorious against Haryana while as the match between Uttar Pradesh and Kerala ended in a goalless draw.
The inaugural match of the tournament that was played between Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana turned out to be a one sided affair as the hosts drubbed their opponents to register an emphatic 9-0 victory. The spectators who were present during the match jeered the host team and egged them on during the course of the match.
The Jammu and Kashmir team dominated the match from the first minute and carried it along towards the end of the stipulated time. For the hosts Shakti Kumar, Asif Qadir, Javid Ahmad Sheikh, Stanzin Phantok and Ubair Baba emerged out as the stars of the match. While Shakti netted three goals, Asif and Javid netted two goals each. Both Stanzin and Ubair scored one goal each.
Earlier in the morning, Governor Narendra Nath Vohra inaugurated the five day championship in which nine teams of Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Orissa, Haryana and Delhi postal circles are taking part. The tournament is being organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Postal Circle. First Lady Usha Vohra, and youth services and sports minister; Rajinder Singh Chib were prominent among those present at the inaugural function.
Speaking on the occasion, Vohra observed that sports promote close understandings and camaraderie among youth of various parts of the country. Vohra expressed happiness that the environment had started looking up and this year has been a very good year for the state with a large number of tourists visiting the state.
The Governor complimented John Samuel, Chief Post Master General, Jammu and Kashmir Circle, for taking notable initiatives not only for reviving the past glory of the postal services but also for the promotion of sports. The players of all the teams were introduced to the Governor.
The First Lady released “My Stamp” brought out by the Department of Posts on this occasion. The youth services and sports minister while speaking on the occasion gave details of the various initiatives being taken for the promotion of sports and games in the State.
Dalip Thussu, Secretary, J&K State Sports Council; office bearers of the J&K Football Association, football lovers and players were present on the occasion.
