Punjab to lock horns with Maharashtra in U-19 Boys Football Tournament

SRINAGAR, Oct 11: Blanking their opponents in one-sided semifinals, the formidable sides of Punjab and Maharashtra sealed berth in the finals and will lock horns against each other in the summit clash in the 61st National School Games Under-19 Boys Football Tournament, being organized by the Department of Youth Services and Sports at various venues, here.
This soccer extravaganza, in which 29 States are participating is being held under the overall supervision of Director General Youth Services  and Sports, Jehangir Mir.
Earlier, in the first semifinal, Punjab defeated Rajasthan by four goals to nil (4-0), while in the second semifinal, Maharashtra blanked NVS by five goals to nil (5-0). Both the semifinal winners dominated the games from the word go and overpowered their opponents in both the halves.
Earlier, in the quarterfinals, Punjab defeated Kerala by ten goals to nine (10-9) via tie-breaker, Rajasthan drubbed KVS by four goals to two (4-2), Maharashtra scripted a solitary goal win over Haryana (1-0) and NVS got better of Delhi by one goal to nil (1-0).
The Championship, in which over 500 players drawn from 29 States of the Country are participating, was inaugurated by Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in presence of Union Sports Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal and Minister for Sports, Imran Raza Ansari.
The final between Punjab and Maharashtra will be played tomorrow, which will be followed by a concluding ceremony at Bakshi Stadium at 11: 30 am.
The Tournament is being held under the auspices of School Games Federation of India (SGFI), with an objective to promote sports in the State and particularly to promote the popular game of football in the Valley.
