NOWSHERA, Aug 27: A check dam constructed with the cost of over Rs 30 lakh by the Soil Conservation Department near Sunderbani in district Rajouri  was washed away during flood, hardly three days back.
Inaugurated with big fan fare by the Minister for Environment and Forests Mian Altaf hardly three months back, in presence for a local Minister and a legislator besides several bureaucrats including DC, the entire public money spent on this dam virtually has gone to the drain.
It was widely projected in the function that this dam on Marchola Nallah will provide water to the people of the area for irrigation and other purposes and would also help in raising water table of the area and could provide great relief to the locals during summer months. But in this 100 feet long concrete dam raised by the officers of the Soil Conservation Department in the absence of expertise from Engineering Department, failed to provide service even for one season and collapsed.
Congress MLC Ravinder Sharma when contacted that this dam was constructed by the Soil Conservation Department. The public money has gone waste. He said absence of expertise in the field or sub-standard material work or wrong design etc could be the reasons but people wanted to know the real cause. He demanded an inquiry into the collapse and urged the Minister for Forests and Environment and DC Rajouri to take cognizance of the matter and hold an inquiry, fixing responsibility on the officials including the then Joint Director and other people connected with the project.
