SRINAGAR : Traffic on the historic Mughal road was disrupted again due to fresh snowfall and slippery road condition while more than 100 vehicles are still stranded on the national highway, connecting the Ladakh region with Kashmir valley.
However, two-way traffic was plying on the 300-km-long national highway, linking the Valley with the rest of the country.
A traffic police official said that the Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region was again closed this morning due to fresh snowfall early this morning.
The road had become slippery, forcing authorities to suspend traffic as a precautionary measure, he said, adding that if weather permits and road condition improves traffic will be allowed later in the day.
Meanwhile, large number of vehicles are stranded on both sides of the Pir-ki-Gali, where few inches of snowfall was recorded this morning.
He said there are more than 100 vehicles, mostly empty trucks and those carrying passengers are stranded on the other sides of the Zojila pass. There was slippery road condition at India gate and Captain Mode which led to the vehicles getting stranded at these places on the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway.
For the past two days vehicles stranded on other side of the Zojila were allowed to proceed towards Kashmir after the highway was put through after remaining closed for few days due to snowfall and slippery road condition.
However, no fresh vehicle will be allowed and only stranded vehicles are being cleared, he said.
The Centre and state governments have already approved construction of a tunnel at Zojila to make it all weather road. (UNI)
