Excelsior Correspondent
Jammu, Nov 16: Press Club of Jammu today observed the National Press Day here at club office premises.
The observation was organized by Management Committee of Press Club of Jammu.
In a message to the entire journalist fraternity, Ashwani Kumar, president of the Club paid homage to journalists, who have sacrificed their lives for the cause of freedom of press and services.
Mr Kumar in particular named journalists Late Ved Bhasin and Late SD Rohmetra and said that the entire journalist fraternity should learn lesson from the teachings given by  these two strong pillars of journalism in Jammu and Kashmir, who had always fought for the freedom of press and rights of fourth estate.
Ashwani Kumar, cautioned the PDP-BJP Government that in recent days police and the State administration were threatening the scribes in the State. Even some of the journalists were humiliated by police in public. In the last one month three incidents have taken place in the state where some of the anti-national elements are threatening the Editor of the local English daily of Jammu, Mr Kumar said and urged the J&K Police Chief, K Rajendra Kumar to initiate inquiry about the incident in Udhampur last week, where scribe of  local daily has been humiliated  by police.
As the theme of this year’s Press Day is impact of cartooning and caricature as medium of expression of opinion- the president of PCJ also added that the cartoonists are also important as they express the sentiments of the public much better than a reporter or a cameraman.
PCJ secretary general, Zorawar Singh Jamwal also said that National Press Day is an important day for the fraternity. He also urged to the State Government in particular and Union Government in general to think about the rights of the media fraternity.
“Threats to the media persons have been increasing in the recent past and State Government should think over it seriously,” Mr Jamwal said and added that many photojournalists and video journalists and even reporters were injured in many terrorist related and other incidents in this State.
