JAMMU, Nov 30: A six day Inter-Regional POWERGRID Cricket Tournament 2015 got underway, here today.
The Tournament will conclude on December 5, 2015. Eleven teams from various regions of POWERGRID are participating in this Tournament.
The participating teams are Eastern Region-I(ER-I), Eastern Region-II (ER-II), Northern Region-I (NR-I), Southern Region-I (SR-I), Southern Region-II (SR-II), Western Region-I (WR-I), Western Region-II (WR-II), North Eastern Region (NER), Corporate Centre(CC), POSOCO and hosts Northern Region-II (NR-II).
The Tournament is of T-20 format and is being played on league cum knockout basis. The 11 teams divided into three pools will clash with each other and fight for the top honours.
The matches will be conducted daily in three grounds namely Amandeep Cricket Academy ground, Gandhi Ground and Khalsa College Ground.
The Tournament was inaugurated by SK Sharma, Executive Director POWERGRID, Northern Region-II in presence of Meena Sharma, president Shrishti Mahila Samiti, senior officials of POWERGRID and other guests.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Sharma impressed upon the players to play the game in true sportsmanship spirit and emphasized on the fact that such events are organized by POWERGRID not only to create a sense of competition among its employees but also to make them appreciate the culture and values of co-workers.
He said that such events bring the employees closer and help them to build a team spirit which is a must for success of any organization.
The highlight of the inaugural ceremony was the march past of Army band in sync with that of the players.
In the inaugural match of the Tournament, hosts NR-II defeated defending champions WR-II by 6 wickets. Batting first, WR-II scored 109 runs. Rajesh Chaurasai top scored with 37 runs. Asif and Sandeep took 2 wickets each. NR II scored 112 in 19 overs. Shafiq (34) and Sandeep unbeaten 31 were the main scorers. Sandeep Panwar was adjudged as man of the match.
In another match of the Tournament CC defeated NER by 80 runs.
