JAMMU, Dec 12: State’s top Table Tennis players including Jhanvi, Shzar, Shreya and others, apart from coach Meenu while raising fingers on the selection of the Table Tennis State team for National Level Women’s competitions being hosted by the State at Jammu, alleged that the players have not been selected on merit to represent the State in these games.
Table Tennis coach Meenu said that such a selection has not only left the talented players in the lurch, but also marred talent in the State.
However, the officers of the Sports Department justfying the selection of the teams said that the games under Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan (RGKA) are altogether different from those of the other National Level events, as these are to be organised at Panchayat Level to promote sports in rural areas.
“Each district is given the option of holding competitions in three sports disciplines under RGKA. District Jammu had opted for other games and not Table Tennis. So, there was no way to pick the girls from Jammu for this event,” said Sukhdev Raj, District Youth Services and Sports Officer Jammu.
