As temps dip, authorities close Mughal Road for traffic

Srinagar, Dec 29: As the Cold wave tightened its grip across Kashmir valley with the minimum temperature below freezing, authorities today closed the Mughal Road for winter due to slippery road conditions.
Authorities here said that the Mughal Road will remain closed from January 1, 2016 till further orders. They said that the road has been closed due to sharp drop in temperature and freezing of water that leads to slippery condition of the road.
They have asked the general public, especially residents of Shopian, Rajouri and Poonch, not to travel on the road as it can lead to accidents. They have also asked the police to ensure that no vehicle plies on the road.
Earlier, Srinagar-Leh National Highway was also closed for winter from December 20 due to heavy snowfall in Zojlia area and slippery road conditions.
The temperatures across Kashmir dropped today with Srinagar recording minus 3. 7 degree Celsius against yesterday’s minus 2.7 degree Celsius while maximum temperature was recorded at 10. 8 degree Celsius.
Gulmarg was the coldest place in the Valley with a low of minus 6.6 degree Celsius against yesterday’s minus 5.4 degree Celsius. The day temperature of the place was recorded at 6.3 degree Celsius.
The minimum temperature dropped several degrees in Pahalgam hill resort to settle at minus 6.4 degree Celsius against yesterday’s minus 2.9 degrees Celsius. The day temperature of Pahalgam settled at 10.5 degree Celsius.
The minimum temperature in North Kashmir town of Kupwara was minus 2.5 degree Celsius, while the Kokernag resort in South recorded a low of minus 0.9 degree Celsius. The maximum temperature of Kupwara settled at 11.4 degree Celsius and Kokernag settled 10.6 degree Celsius.
Qazigund, registered a minimum of minus 0.6 degree Celsius and a maximum of 12.1 degree Celsius.
Leh continued to be the coldest recorded place in the State as the mercury stayed close to yesterday’s minus 12. 0 degree Celsius at -11.8 and the day temperature settled at 7.9 degree Celsius.
Kargil registered a minimum of minus 10.2 degree Celsius, making it the second coldest place in the State. The day temperature of the place settled at 4.0 degree Celsius.
As the skies were clear today, the Sun came out during morning giving some relief from the intense cold. The prolonged dry spell during the winter has resulted in an increase in common ailments like cough, cold and respiratory problems particularly among the children and elderly.
