Kathua, Jan 17: Director General of Police (DGP), K Rajendra Kumar said that Jammu and Kashmir Police has been focusing on promoting sports activities in the State and the organization has been providing logistic support to the talented youngsters to provide them opportunities to hone their skills in the field of sports.
Mr Rajendra was speaking at the closing ceremony of 6th Police Martyrs Memorial Cricket Championship 2015-16 at Sports Stadium Kathua today.
The tournament was inaugurated on December 15, 2015. He felicitated the teams who participated in the tournament and showed best performance during the tourney. He said that more than 16 teams from the state and north India took part in the prestigious tournament.
The DGP said that JKP is organizing various tournaments in the state every year in the memory of its martyrs, who have laid down their lives for bringing peace and normalcy in the State. He further said that police organization besides its professional duties is promoting sports culture in the State and the motive behind this is to provide platform to the youth to achieve excellence in the field so that they could compete at national and international levels. He said that the organization has chalked out the sports calendar for the year 2016 and different tournaments of various sports events would be organized at different places across the State.
On the occasion, final match was played between Sabhi Cricket Club Hoshiarpur and Akshay Star Cricket Club. Sabhi Cricket Club won the match   and declared winner of the championship. Deepak Punia was declared as Man of the Match and Rahul Tewatia of runner-up team was declared Man of the Series.
The DGP distributed trophies and cash prizes among the winning team including bumper prize (Alto 800 Car) to the man of the series. The Car was sponsored Satyam Cement and TMT Saria under the supervision of Chairman Devinder Verma, Lalit Agarwal and Naveen Partap.
Earlier, IGP Jammu Zone, Danish Rana gave brief resume of the tournament. He said that to make the event a success the organizing committee had made good arrangements for maintenance of playing fields and also proper sanitation in and around the venues.
Among the others, the closing ceremony was attended by DIG JKS Range, Ashkoor Ahmed Wani, SP Kathua, Neeva Jain, Deputy Commissioner, Romesh Kumar, Principal PTS Kathua, Sanjeev Khajuria, CO CRPF 121 Bn, SS Rana, Additional SP Kathua, Nasir Ahmed, Chairman CTM Kathua, KC Sharma, president District Industries Association, Ajit Bawa, prominent Industrialists, prominent citizens, families of martyrs and large gathering of cricket lovers.
