UDHAMPUR, Sept 11: Organized by National Translation Mission (NTM) and Central Institute of Indian Languages, (CIIL) Mysore, in collaboration with Government College for Women (GWC), Udhampur, a five day ‘Translators Orientation Programme for Knowledge Text Translation (Dogri)’, was inaugurated at GWC, here today.
Today’s inaugural session was attended by translation experts like Dr Puran Chand Tandon, Professor, Department of Hindi, Delhi University and Secretary, Bhartiya Anuvad Parisahd and Dr Rakesh Sharma, Research Officer, Central Hindi Directorate, New Delhi. The key note address was read by Prof Lalit Magotra, President, Dogri Sanstha, Jammu, while Savita Bakshi, Additional Secretary, J&K Cultural Academy, was the chief guest.
Giving details about NTM, at the opening of inaugural session, Sunil Choudhary, the resource person and one of the conveners of the programme, said that after Prime Minister’s proposal during the opening of National Knowledge Commission, the NTM was established in June 2008 as a scheme by Ministry of HRD, New Delhi, with mandate to make knowledge accessible to all by transcending language barriers, democratize knowledge and create a knowledge society. He further said part of Mission’s mandate is to make ‘knowledge texts’ available in all 22 Indian languages listed in the Eighth Scheduler of the Indian Constitution through translation, to work towards establishing translation as an industry. He said in a scenario where only 4 percent students can read and write English, the beneficiaries of Translation Programme are going to be students with limited access to knowledge available in languages other than own, teachers of various disciplines, regional language publishers and translation software developers.
Prof Lalit Magotra, in his keynote address, said that translation is very old activity which arose out of movement of different groups and communities and their need to communicate with each other. Translation and interpretation leading to transference of knowledge from one society to another has played a vital role in human development.
This cross-fertilization and assimilation of ideas has led to empowerment of human species. He said unlike translations of literary masterpieces where the spirit of the expression is needed to be communicated, the challenge is to be exact in translating scientific and social sciences texts.
Chief guest of function, Savita Bakshi, thanked NTM and CIIL in holding such a programme that also furthers the mandate of Academy. Prof N K Resutra, Principal, Government Degree College, Boys, Udhampur, also spoke on the occasion.
Prof Yudhvir Singh, Principal, GWC, Udhampur, while presenting vote of thanks urged the participants and students to take serious interest in the programme as translation being an important service to nation, is also a viable option for employment. Earlier Prof Bharat Bhushan Sharma, senior faculty member of GWC, Udhampur welcomed the guests, who included well known writers, historians, scholars such as Prof Champa Sharma and Prof Veena Gupta, former HoDs, Department of Dogri, University of Jammu, Prof Deshbandhu Dogra Nutan, Prof Shiv Nirmohi and Balraj Bakshi.
