Clashes, demo in Old City

Srinagar, May 13: Stone-throwing clashes between youths and security forces erupted in Old City’s Saraf Kadal area here today after Friday congregational prayers before a protest was held at Nowhatta by masked youths.
Dozens of youths pelted stones on security forces at Saraf Kadal this afternoon and engaged forces in clashes. The police responded by firing teargas and pepper gas canisters towards the stone-throwers ensuing clashes.
The clashes between the two sides continued for several hours and resulted in complete halt of trade and transport activities. They, the clashes, later spread to adjoining Rajouri Kadal and Islamia School areas. There was no report of injury to anyone.
Earlier, scores of masked assembled outside Jamia Masjid here at Nowhatta and waved flags of Islamic State and Pakistan. The youths include two suspected persons who had donned army fatigues with military boots and were holding flags of Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit.
