JAMMU, May 17: ‘World Telecommunication and Information Society Day’ was celebrated today with great enthusiasm by the Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu Local Centre, Model Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET), Jammu and Mahant Bachittar Singh College of Engineering and Technology (MBSCET), Jammu.
The Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu Local Centre celebrated the Day at Institutional Complex, Sector-3, Channi Himmat, Jammu by holding a Seminar on theme topic “ICT entrepreneurship for social impact”. The seminar was attended by a large number of engineers from various departments and organizations.
HK Verma, Chief General Manager (Telecom), Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, J&K Government and Ashutosh Bajaj, Circle Business Head, Reliance Jio (Infocomm) (CEO) Jammu, graced this occasion as chief guest and guest of honour, respectively.
Nine papers on the theme were presented by Er SC Thukral, FIE; Er Ranjeev Sawhney, MIE; Er Sewa Ram, MIE; Er Supinder Jeet Singh, AMIE; Er Akash Dusgotra, AMIE; Er KR Suri, Er Suruchi Sharma, Er Sandeep Gupta and Er Rajesh Kumar Angural.
In his address, the chief guest stressed upon upgrading of fiber backhaul as key driver for the development of telecom generations. He said that the competition among the telecom players has cut down the cost of services to the end users and has revolutionized this industry. He also enlightened the role of ICTs and Telecommunication in rural areas in improving digital literacy among the rural masses.
Ashutosh Bajaj emphasized that India has a long route to travel in comparison to developed nations at global scenario. He also focused on Government of India plan for digitization in boosting technological advancements quoting examples of IoT (Internet of Things).
Er Ajay Gupta, FIE; Chairman, presided over the function and he concluded with the remarks that ICT entrepreneurs and start-ups and small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) have a particularly relevant role in ensuring economic growth in a sustainable and inclusive manner.
Er BL Rawal, MIE; Honorary Secretary presented the welcome address, conducted the proceedings of the seminar and proposed the vote of thanks.
Meanwhile, MIET celebrated the World Telecom and Information Society Day (WTISD) at its Kot Bhalwal campus.
Prof Rajni Kant, Department of Physics and Electronics, University of Jammu (JU) was the chief guest on the occasion. The highlight of WTISD was the panel discussion by industry experts comprising Ashutosh Bajaj, Circle Head, Reliance Jio, Imran Ahmed, Head, Service Operations, Ericsson India, Akhil Chopra, GM, Business Development, Airmesh, Kulbhushan Sharma, DGM, BSNL and Saurabh Lunkar, Marketing Head, Vodafone.
Director, Academics, MIET, Prof SK Sharma, in his welcome address described the rich spectrum of activities under the umbrella of the World Telecom Day which is an annual feature at MIET.
Director, MIET, Prof Ankur Gupta, dwelt on the theme of “ICT Entrepreneurship for Social Impact” and encouraged students to take up challenges and devise innovative solutions for these.
In his keynote address, Prof Rajni Kant, presented a unique perspective on the universe, which was both technically and philosophically profound at the same time. He opined that while technical communication is essential in today’s world, personal communication both verbal and non-verbal should not be neglected.
The industry-experts later engaged in a free-wheeling discussion on a broad-range of issues from technical challenges in telecom sector to business and regulatory hurdles, user experience, expectations from upcoming 4G services and the skill set required by young engineers to successfully align with industry expectations.
The event was spread out over 2 days including workshops for 150 Electronics and Communications students on Mechatronics and IoT by Chandigarh-based Eureka Electrosoft Limited.
A demonstration of the high-end spectrum analyzer equipment from the Microwave Test and Measurement Lab at MIET was conducted by Tejinder Singh, Faculty member ECE.
The Day was celebrated in MBSCET Jammu, where a programme in this connection was organized by Electronics and Communication Department in collaboration with the Institute of Electronics and Telecom Engineers Engineers (IETE), Jammu Centre and Rural Technology Action Group, University of Jammu.
The theme of the programme was ‘ICT Entrepreneurship for Social Impact’ with total four events namely PPT presentation, project presentation, ECE Champ and poster making. Prof Manoj K Dhar, Director, School of Biotechnology, Jammu University, was the chief guest while Rangil Singh, chairman, MBSCET, Dr Rakesh Vaid, chairman, IETE, Jammu Centre, Dr Parveen Lehana, secretary, IETE, Jammu Centre and Lakhbir Singh Bawa , advisor, MBSCET, also graced the occasion.
Prof SK Badyal, Principal, MBSCET, in his address highlighted the importance of Information Commission Technology. The programme concluded with felicitation of winners by distribution cash prizes.
