Jammu Chamber stages protest against hike in VAT, Toll Tax

JAMMU, June 2: The traders from various markets  and Bazaars of Jammu and members from  Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industry  today took out a protest march which concluded at  the main Commercial Taxes office at Rail Head Complex here today.
A large number of shopkeepers,  other businessmen and members of  the Trade and Industry earlier assembled at  the Chamber House at Rail Head Complex  and then started protest march towards the main office of the Commissioner, Commercial  Taxes. They were carrying banners and placards in their hands demanding  roll back on the hike given in the VAT and Toll Tax in the recently presented Budget  in the State Legislature. They were also raising slogans in support of their demands.
President of  the Jammu Chamber,  Rakesh Gupta besides heads of various Markets and Bazaar Associations were leading the protest march besides CCI office bearers. The protest march after passing through entire Rail Head Complex and Bahu Plaza market area,  finally culminated at the office of Commercial Taxes. They also put a lock at the main gate of the CT office to mark their protest.
Talking to the Excelsior  JCCI president , Rakesh Gupta said that Kashmir Chamber has already given consent to go ahead for complete bandh  on June 4. He said tomorrow at 11 AM, the Chamber members and heads of various Trade bodies shall hold meeting  and decide final course of action. If the Government reviews its decision, the Chamber will withdraw its bandh call.
Mushtaq Wani, president Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry said that bandh programme of June 4 stands and the Kashmir  Chamber will be taking a final review of the next course of action tomorrow at 11 AM in a meeting to be held at Chamber House.  He said that KCCI has already sent representation to the Government/ Finance Minister seeking roll back on Toll Tax and VAT and if they review their decision there is no purpose of going for the strike/ bandh.
Mr Wani further said that Transporters Associations in Kashmir have also supported the bandh  and they are also joining the Kashmir traders for strike on Saturday. Regarding Jammu transporters decision, they were not still aware, Wani added.
However, T S Wazir  chairman All J&K  Motor Transporters  Association, Jammu when contacted said that transporters/ operators have not given call for bandh on June 4.  They have not taken any decision in this regard so far. Moreover, no meeting has been held with the Jammu Chamber members in this connection till today,  Mr Wazir added.
