JAMMU, June 3: Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu, in collaboration with Society for Environmental Education and Research (SEER) and Activity Public Higher Secondary School, Janipur, organized one day ‘Awareness Programme’ to mark the celebrations of World Environment Day which falls on 5th of June every year.
Prof Ambrish Mahajan, Dean, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Central University, Himachal Pradesh, was the chief guest on the occasion. He exhorted the audience to be rational while using all the resources and to be environmentally conscious.
Prof A K Raina, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, deliberated upon the relevance and importance of Environment Day.
Dr Neeraj Sharma, Incharge, IME, Bhaderwah Campus, gave a brief introduction to the theme of this year’s Environment Day “Zero tolerance for the illegal wildlife trade”. He highlighted various cases of wildlife trafficking from India and abroad and focussed on various international efforts to prevent this illegal trade.
R K Khajuria stressed upon the need of involvement of school students in such awareness programmes so that they can act as the ‘Environmental Ambassadors’ in their respective schools and carry forward the message of environment protection and conservation.
Earlier, Nikhil Gupta, Manaya Bhandari and Tanya Gupta, students from Activity Public School, Janipur, spoke about multifaceted environmental issues prevailing in the State followed by the presentations by Kulvinder Kaur, Pihu Gupta, Assadullah Sheikh and Ranjan Sharma, all Research Scholars from Department of Environmental Sciences, JU who presented their research findings and suggested remedial measures to combat various environmental problems of the state. At the end, Dr Piyush Malaviya, proposed formal vote of thanks.
Among others present on the occasion, included Prof R.K Rampal, Dr Deepika Slathia and Dr Meenakshi Khajuria. The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Kirti Pandita.
