JAMMU, June 21:  Former Minister and senior Congress leader Raman Bhalla has alleged that JMC authorities ignored the much needed pre-monsoon works including clearing silt, garbage from nallahs and deep drains  and also ensure protection work at the vulnerable areas.
The Congress leader who visited several city localities including Channi Rama, Malik Market, Pamposh Colony, Nanak Nagar, Preet Nagar and Gangyal area where flood and rain water during heavy rain wrecked havoc in city said that due to the negligence of the JMC and UEED authorities, the people suffered heavy losses. The water entered their houses and shops caused extensive damage to them. The Government must provide them compensation, he demanded.
Mr Bhalla said that before the onset of Monsoon every year the concerned agencies clear all the nallahs and deep drains  and also initiate protections works wherever required. This year such works have been avoided on the plea that no sufficient funds were made available to them. It was just first rain of the season and the JMC and UEED besides ERA got exposed before the people. The heavy rains of Monsoon have not yet started. What will be the fate of the people of Jammu city.
He further said that a nallah behind Hyundai showroom falling in Chhanni Rama was ignored by the ERA. The flooded water entered many lanes and also extensively damaged main lane. Water entered in nearly 2000 houses and several vehicles/ bikes also got washed away. This damage could have been averted if the JMC and  ERA had taken necessary measures.  No officer from JMC or UEED besides others from Administration visited the affected areas as claimed by the people, Mr Bhalla maintained.
The Congress leader urged upon the Government to initiate such works on war footing in Jammu city localities so that damage to the public property in coming rains days could be contained.
