JAMMU, July 4: IVY Hosp-ital, Amritsar, today announced the launch of ‘heart valve repair center’ under the aegis of its Cardio Thoracic Surgery unit.
Dr Pankaj Goel, Director & Chief Heart Surgeon said that this is the first time in the region that a dedicated program for heart valve repair has been established.
He said further, “conventionally valve replacement is done for various heart valve diseases. As a consequence patients have to be kept on blood thinning medicines for life long. They have their own complications and are sometimes difficult to manage. Women who plan a family, are especially at a big disadvantage after valve replacement.”
“Valve repair is the best option for such patients. In this operation, the patient’s own valve is preserved using various techniques. The patient need not be on any blood thinners and can lead a perfectly normal life. It is a technically demanding procedure requiring years of training and experience. It also requires state-of-art equipment including 3D Echocard-iography.”
However, the success of such a complex procedure requires a team of experts. Keeping this in mind a heart valve repair group has been formed at IVY which includes Dr Goel, Dr Yadvinder Singh, cardiologist and Dr Rajesh Arora, cardiac anesthetist.
The group will evaluate each case thoroughly regarding fitness for repair to give the best possible result, informed Dr Goel who has over 13-yr experience in such complex operations.
