SRINAGAR, July 26: Appealing to the State Government to remove the communication gag imposed in the valley, main opposition National Conference (NC) working president Omar Abdullah today said now that curfew and restrictions have been removed in Srinagar, can the cellular service and mobile internet be restored as well.
“Now that curfew & restrictions in Srinagar have been relaxed can we please have our mobile services & internet restored as well,” Abdullah, who is the former Chief Minister of the State, wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.
He was reacting to the decision of the Government to remove curfew from Srinagar, where life continued to remain suspended for the 18th day today due to strike. The NC working president’s tweet got a mix response from the twitteratis, with majority of them hitting out at him, asking Abdullah how he was able to tweet if internet was not working.
“Thanks for inventing new tech @abdullah_omar where your brain can send tweets without any internet connection,” a tweet said. “@abdullah_omar – wondering how were you able to tweet without the internet,” another tweet read.
However, only broadband internet is functional while mobile internet which is the service widely used my masses in the Valley remained suspended since protests broke out on July 9 following the killing of Burhan Wani and two other militants were killed in an encounter in Kokernag in Anantnag.
Meanwhile, cellular services remained suspended 13th consecutive day today. Only BSNL postpaid mobile phones are working in the Valley. Besides 51 dead, more than 5000 people, half of them security personnel, were also injured in the violent clashes since July 9. The dead included three police personnel and three women.
