SRINAGAR, Aug 2: Kashmir’s lone paediatric hospital at Sonwar in uptown Srinagar is shrouded under a foul stink these days as Badami Bagh (BB) Cantonment Board has failed to lift the garbage dumped near the hospital for last several days which is posing a grave health threat to children who are brought for treatment from different parts of Valley.
The garbage attracts stray dogs and birds that can be seen scavenging for food in the rubbish thereby, posing threat to the passersby. The stray cows which can be seen roaming around these places consume plastic and other harmful substances from these places which cause serious injuries to their intestines and stomach.
Kashmir had been simmering for last 25 days following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani and lifting of waste from major towns and city is proving to be herculean task. The movement of vehicles in particular is tough as lots of vehicles have been damaged by angry protestors at different places across Kashmir.
Dr K K Pandita, Superintendent G B Pant Hospital Sonwar Srinagar, said the foul smell only comes after a bacterial action on leftover food takes place which is injurious to health. “Last week, I also felt a foul smell, enquired about its source and immediately called the concerned authorities to lift the garbage,” he added.
Chief Executive officer of Cantonment Board, Kapil Goyal, when contacted admitted the delay in lifting garbage and said that due to prevailing unrest in the Valley they were not able to lift and transport the garbage. “Within one or two days we will lift the garbage,” he added.
