JAMMU, Aug 20: Gandhi Global Family (GGF) in collaboration with Gandhi Peace Foundation (GPF), Jammu under the aegis of United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), New Delhi, celebrated the International humanitarian Day here today.
In this connection, a programme was organized at KC Public School Jammu in which various schools of Jammu city working together for the promotion of Mahatma Gandhi ideology of peace and non-violence participated.
Padmashri SP Varma, president, GGF J&K, who presided over the function, highlighted the current humanitarian crisis the world is facing today where a record 130 million people are dependent on humanitarian assistance to survive. He stressed upon the need to prevent violent conflicts by following the Mahatma Gandhi’s Philosophy of non-violence at all levels.
Gandhi Global Family also took initiative in honoring the humanitarian workers on this day. In this regard, Dr Seema Rohmetra, Co-ordinator Gandhi Peace Foundation, Jammu and Dr Ashaq Malik, president, Attitude Change International, Darhal (Rajouri), were first to get the Humanitarian Award of the Year in female and male categories, respectively. UN-India connect pins were also presented to them on behalf of UNIC New Delhi.
While speaking on the occasion, Dr Seema Rohmetra emphasized upon the need of inculcating Gandhian values among school children to prevent future conflicts, wars and man-made disasters hence making this world a better place to live for all. She appealed to open Mahatma Gandhi Clubs in every school for making children responsible citizens. Dr Rohmetra also expressed hope that fellow citizens may also join the Gandhian movement for nation building.
UN Secretary General Ban ki Moon’s message on World Humanitarian Day was also read on the occasion. Rana Rajinder Singh, Pallavi Gautom and Priya Singh made power point presentations on the occasion.
Earlier, Principal of KC Public School, Amarendra Misra welcomed the guests. Sonia Thakur conducted the proceedings of the programme whereas young Gandhian Manish Joshi, Co-ordinator GGF Jammu region, presented vote of thanks.
