LEH, Sept 11: As many as 5000 runners from different parts of world participated in the 5th Ladakh Annual Marathon, which was organized by Director, Rimo Expedition, Chhewang Motup Goba.
Ladakh Marathon had four categories which included a 7 km run for fun, a half marathon (21.1 km), a full marathon (41.1 km) and Khardungla Challenge (a 71.2 km-ultra marathon over the 17,617 ft-high Khardung La pass considered as the World’s highest motorable road). There were 76 runners in the Khardungla including 5 foreign nationals and 35 from different parts of country.
In Khardongla Challenge, Tsewang Todan and Shabir Hussain were joint winners and Mohd Illiyas was the third position holder. Sonam Chuskit won the first position in the women’s category, while Divaya was declared as second and Parvin secured third position. The winners of Khardongla Challenge were awarded with a cash prize of Rs 50,000.
The first, second and the third winners of full marathon in men’s category were Jigmet Namgyal, Stanzin Norbu and Jigmet Norbu respectively, while the winners of the women’s team were Tsetan Dolkar, Shikha Pahwa and Namgyal Lhamo respectively.
In the half marathon section of men’s team, Nawang Tsering, Tsewang Namgyal and Lundup Dorjay clinched first, second and third positions respectively, while in women category, Jigmet Dolma, Diskit Dolma and Tashi Ladol clinched top three positions respectively.
Ladakh MP Thupstan Chhewang, CEC, LAHDC, Dr Sonam Dawa and CLP leader and MLA Leh Nawang Rigzin Jora distributed the medals and prizes to the winners. Nawang Rigzin Jora also participated in the 7 km, which was just for fun and had the maximum number of participants.
