White Water Rafting Expedition flagged-off to tame Zanskar River

JAMMU, Sept 19: Fire and Fury Corps launched an Army Level White Water Rafting Expedition comprising three officers, three Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and 20 other ranks to tame the wildest stretch of Zanskar River.
The expedition is a culmination of arduous efforts starting from June to September to train the troops of 14 Corps and building the conventional capacities for operations.
Lt Gen PJS Pannu, GOC, Fire and Fury Corps conveys his good wishes to the skilled and brave adventurists of Fire and Fury Gunners for taking on the challenge.
Pioneers in the field of Rafting, operating the training node for the Army and Northern Command, The local Arty Unitforms the core of the expedition team and is aptly poised to traverse the gushing rapids over a distance of 160 km. The mission will be accomplished over four days from 19 to 22 September covering a stretch of 52, 48, 33 and 27 KM respectively. There are a total of 16 rapids ranging from Grade I and IV.
The aim of this expedition is to validate the White Water Rafting Capability and foster team spirit through adventure sport.
The team will interact with civilians en-route to spread knowledge on joining Army, latest happenings at the National and International levels, learning and sharing culture and traditions and also establish medical camp as aid to civilians.
Furthermore, the expedition also aims at integrating the people belonging to Zanskar valley civilization and promoting the ecology of tourism among Ladakh populace. Youth of the region are particularly being co-opted and a free workshop of rafting is being organized for those who exhibit interest and register themselves. Army has opened a helpline number 94698-15200 for registration.
On the first day, the expedition was flagged off by Gulam Mohammad Khan, SDM Padam from Padam alongwith Tsering Norbu, Agriculture Inspector and Tsering Dorje, Tourism Advisor. School children and villagers were present on the occasion.
