JAMMU, Sept 23: Mountaineering expedition organized by Mountaineering Association of J&K to Matho Kangri peak (20439ft) in Ladakh Himalaya was flagged-in by General Secretary of Mountaineering Association of J&K Ram Khajuria, here today.
The expedition organized by Mountaineering Association of J&K and sponsored by J&K State Sports Council after a gap of 18 years was a complete success as all the eight members of the expedition including two girls scaled the peak.
In fact, the composition of the team, a mixture of experienced and budding mountaineers, immaculate planning and its perfect execution by the team leader Ram Singh combined with support from J&K State Sports Council, J&K Police, Kashmir Tourism Department and a local traveling agency at Leh Great Himalayan Adventure made the mountaineering expedition to a formidable peak look like a trekking expedition.
It was a perfectly trained and a fully fit team having Everester Ram Singh, the Leader, who had spent about 45 days at an altitude between 12000 ft to 14000 ft, being a leader of rescue team during Shri Amarnath Yatra before taking up the assignment to the peak; then there was another Everester Sajad Haider, a highly acclaimed mountaineer and physical trainer. Tsering Dorjay from Leh was another asset of the team who had climbed the peak in an earlier expedition, Ghulam Mohammad Wani, affectionately called Gulu, a superbly fit and fully trained mountaineer and an avid photographer was the live wire of the team. The other four young mountaineers Manik Slathia, an MOI trained mountaineer, Shawetica Khajuria, Ambreen Fatima and Shashikant Sharma, all trained mountaineers had worked really very hard to be fully fit and properly acclimatized for the expedition. And above all the team had Everester Nima, as one of the high altitude porters engaged by the team who was well versed with the route and technical aspects of the expedition.
Earlier, on September 5, the expedition was flagged-off from KL Saigal Hall, here by Sunil Kumar Sharma, Minister of State for Youth Services and Sports who had promised all support for the future mountaineering expeditions in general and in Kishtwar area in particular.
Encouraged by the magnificent success of the expedition and the support promised by the Minister, Mountaineering Association of J&K is now planning to organize two mountaineering expeditions at Kang Yassey in Ladakh and at a technical peak in Kishtwar region, next year.
