Why play national anthem only in cinemas, why not in Parliament, courts: Omar

SRINAGAR:  Reacting to Supreme Court’s ruling on playing national anthem before every movie in theatres, former Jammu and Kashmir former chief minister Omar Abdullah today asked why only cinemas, why not in Parliament, state Assemblies and counts to lead with an example.

“That’s not the argument, of course we do. The question is why just cinemas, why not every day in Parliament in that case? Lead by example!!!,” Mr Abdullah, who is the working president of National Conference (NC), tweeted.

He was responding to a tweet by former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Manish Tewari which read, “Surprised at criticism of SC ruling on national anthem. If Indians will not stand in respect for their own anthem who else will – the Paki’s?”

Mr Abdullah also asked why only movie goers need lesion in patriotism and why not play it in courts everyday as they are called to order.

“State assemblies? For that matter why not courts, every morning as they are called to order? Do only movie goers need lesson in patriotism?” Mr Abdullah said.

The Supreme Court on November 30 ordered that ‘all the cinema halls in India shall play the national anthem before the feature film starts and all present in the hall are obliged to stand up to show respect to the national anthem’ as a part of their ‘sacred obligation’. (AGENCIES)
