Protection of Human Rights

Sir,
This refers to the writeup’Violations and Protection of Human Rights’ (DE, Dec10, 2016).The human rights are the fundamental universal rights which are available to all the human beings regardless of their religion, race, ethnicity, sex, colour, creed etc and which are necessary for the peaceful existence of humanity. These rights are not earned and they cannot be taken away but sadly, they can be repressed or violated by the individuals and groups All the human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights but many a time these rights are violated by those in power or authority. For instance, children are forced into labour, children and women are trafficked, girls and women are kidnapped and gangraped, in some cases, people in custody are allegedly inhumanely tortured and even soldiers of one country are brutally treated by the other countries.
Though the Government has established Human Rights Commisions at National and State Level which are doing a commendable job, they can only make recommendations which are not binding on the Government or the authority. Therefore, these important bodies need to be provided more teeth and power. The NGOs working for human rights should be sensitised about human rights and also about how to  help the human rights victims in getting justice.People should also be  made aware about the eternal values of life and learn to respect the dignity of all people irrespective of caste, colour, creed, sex, religion etc.
If anybody feels that somebody’s human rights have been violated, he/she ought to complain to the concerned departments or bring to the notice of the Human Rights activists.Judges, lawyers, Human Rights activists, top police officers should be invited  on days such as  Human Rights Day to deliver lectures on the need to promote and protect human rights, especially of people belonging to marginalised sections of the society.Human rights need to be given prominence in curriculum at school, college and university level.Competitions such as seminars, quiz, debates etc should be organised by Education Department, Law Department, etc. in order to promote and protect the human rights of all individuals.
Yours etc….
Ashok Sharma,
Udhampur
