UDHAMPUR, Dec 19: Surprise inspection by Labour Commissioner here today led to protest by shopkeepers, who claimed that Government has passed an ordinance for allowing seven-day working for the business community.
The scene took place when Assistant Labour Commissioner Udhampur, along with her staff, was conducting inspection of market on Monday, which is observed as a Closed Day in Udhampur town. When the inspection team reached at Court Road and entered in a cloth house seeking to know the reason for keeping the shop open on `Naga Day’, the shopkeeper claimed that the Government of India has passed an ordinance on seven days working for business community and the same has also been extended by J&K Government thus automatically abolishing the law on observing `Naga’.
As the Assistant Labour Commissioner said that she was not aware of any such ordinance and booked the businessman, some other shopkeepers also assembled on the spot and resented the Labour Department’s action.
When the inspection team reached at Ramnagar Chowk, the shopkeepers there raised slogans against the Assistant Labour Commissioner and sought to know why three big malls namely V mart, Easy Day and Vishal Mega Mart, situated on the way and open today, were not booked if the Central Government ordinance was not in force in J&K. .
