ROHTAK, Jan 2: “30-lakh people in India suffer from cancer and of them 11-lakh are new cases. Cancer claims 5-lakh lives each year in India. Breast and cervical cancer are the most common forms of cancer in females, whereas lung and liver are most common cancers in males in India.”
This was stated by Dr Archit Pandit Consultant Laparoscopic and Surgical Oncology at Max Super Speciality Hospital Shalimarbag, Delhi while addressing a press conference at Rohtak today to create awareness on “Rising Trends of Cancer in North India”
He said the five most common cancers in men are prostate, lung, colorectum, stomach and liver and in women, the most common cancers were breast, colorectum, lung, cervix and stomach.
With the advancement of surgical techniques now almost 75 to 80 percent of cancer cases can be operated laparoscopically and since this technique offers 40 percent better resolution as compared to conventionalsurgery, as such it results in lesser hospital or ICU stay, minimal blood loss and faster recovery of patient, maintained Dr Pandit.
Dr. Peush Bajpai, Consultant, Medical Oncology said that as per a recent study 70 percent cancer cases in India are diagnosed late and 60 percent patients do not have access to quality treatment. There are only 300 plus cancer centers in India while as 600 more required to meet the demand. About 400 radiotherapy machines are available and 1200 more are required to cover the cancer population adequately.
“Moreover, about 40 percent centers not equipped with all modern facilities. The group also estimated that India needs 500 PET-CTs and 1000 cancer units by year 2020. Doctor patient ratio is 1 in 2000 and currently aim is to achieve 1 in 1000 by 2021.There is also disproportionate skillful manpower and technology in India with cancer specialists, trained staff and specialized cancer centers available in very few cities across India.In India, tobacco alone is responsible for 1.5 lakh cancers, 4.2 million heart diseases, 3.7 million lung diseases every year.”
The country is the oral cancer capital of the world because of rampant habit of tobacco chewing. The Health Ministry’s own statistics show that over 65 per cent of cancers in India can be attributed to tobacco use, pointed Dr. Bajpai
Meanwhile, Dr Amardeep Kohli, VP Operations stated that Max Hospital is regularly conducting cancer clinic in Rohtak, where experts from Max are available on regular basis to extend their expert opinion.
