Walkathon, cyclothon, other activities to be organized: RTO

JAMMU, Jan 7: Motor Vehicle Department in collaboration with Traffic Police Department is observing 28th Road Safety Week-2017 from January 9 to 15.
This was stated by Regional Transport Officer (RTO), Jammu, AK Khajuria while interacting with media persons here today.
He informed that walkathon from Gulshan Ground on January 9 will mark the start of 28th Road Safety Week followed by slew of weeklong activities. Minister of State for Transport (Independent Charge) Sunil Sharma will inaugurate the walkathon, RTO added.
“Road safety awareness camp will be held on January 10 for drivers of commercial vehicles at Railway Station at 11 am and at Maheshpora at 2:30 pm, cyclothon will be held on January 11 at University Campus near General Zorawar Stadium, blood donation camp will be held on January 12 at RTO Office Complex. Narwal and painting competition will be held on January 14 at Kala Kendra Jammu on the subject of Road Safety wherein about 500 students are likely to participate in the competition”, Khajuria informed.
RTO added that the valedictory-cum-closing ceremony of the Road Safety Week will be held at Police Auditorium Gulshan Ground on January 15, wherein Minister of State for Transport (Independent Charge) Sunil Sharma will present awards to the students and participants excelling in each activity organized during the Road Safety Week.
Khajuria impressed upon the concerned officers to ensure synergetic efforts so that the objective of celebrating Road Safety Week is achieved successfully.
Stressing the need to take requisite measures by different departments during the week, Khajuria said that a proactive enforcement drive during the week will underscore the seriousness about safety on the roads.
He informed that there is one death reported in every three and a half minute in accident. J&K being a hilly State is more prone to accidents so it is the need of the hour that the subject of road safety should be adopted by the society as cultural ethos, RTO added.
To a query, Khajuria accepted that there is shortage of staff in the office and they had apprised the higher authorities about the same.
“Despite facing shortage of staff, we still manage programme to apprise the people about traffic rules and regulations in partnership with other departments, volunteers of NCC and Bharat Scouts and Guides”, Khajuria informed.
“To get learning license, we are going to start online process from January 23. People can get theor forms fill online with required credentials and later can download their learner license from our website”, RTO added.
