Shutdown in parts of Srinagar

Excelsior Correspondent
Srinagar, Jan 21: Life was affected in several parts of Srinagar here as authorities imposed restrictions amid shutdown to thwart protests called by separatists on the 27th anniversary of Gaw Kadal killings.
Over 50 persons were killed on this day of 1990 when security forces opened fire at Gaw Kadal on a procession. To mark the anniversary, the separatists had called for a shutdown and protests today. In view of the separatists call, a complete shutdown was observed in Lal Chowk, Budshah Chowk, Gaw Kadal, Maisuma, Amira Kadal, Jehangir Chowk, Basant Bagh and Habba Kadal markets.
To scuttle the scheduled protests, authorities imposed restrictions in Lal Chowk and adjoining areas. The security forces were deployed in large numbers and they had laid barricades and concertina wires to block the movement of pedestrians. A small protest was held at Basant Bagh near massacre memorial but it ended peacefully.
