Media should report facts of legislature proceedings: Javadekar

LUCKNOW, May 4:  Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar today said the media should be reporting the ”actual facts of the House proceedings in order to strengthen the democratic system in the country”.
“We all have to be responsible in strengthening the democratic set-up of the country and media’s role is very important in this,” he said.
Appealing to the members to avoid rushing in the Well of the House (Assembly and Council) to lodge their protests, he said such incidents always  get good coverage but this thing should be avoided.
“In the age of social media and with live telecast of the proceedings in the House, now the members should behave properly as  people are always monitoring their behaviour and language,” he added.
Addressing the gathering of the first-time legislators during an orientation and training programme organised by the UP Assembly here on the second and last day, Mr Javadekar said after a member takes oath, there is a collective responsibility of all the members to preserve the dignity and democratic traditions of the House.
Speaking on the subject of Privilege  proceedings of the House, the Union Minister said ,”Privilege should not be of an individual issue  as in the law, every one is equal.”
He said some time this ‘privilege’ creates dispute between the judiciary and the legislative. He gave an example to explain that once the Allahabad High Court summoned Assembly Speaker and in response the Assembly summoned 22 judges in the House. The dispute was sorted out after much effort, he said.
Mr Javadekar said  every department has to do its work. The legislature should frame the law, the Government should prepare the policy and the judiciary should do the monitoring.
“If everyone does his own work then there would be no dispute,” he said, asking the members not to use derogatory language in their speeches inside the House, which could irritate others.
He said the House runs as per traditions.   About the VIP culture, he said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s move to ban red and blue beacons have been appreciated by everyone. “Everyone should behave properly and VIP culture is not acceptable to anyone,” he said.
The programme was also addressed by former Assembly Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey and former State Minister Ammar Rizvi. (UNI)
