JAMMU, May 7: In a glittering function, Final Frontier – the seventh book of noted doctor and poet Dr K L Chowdhary was released by Vice Chancellor, Central University, Jammu, Prof Ashok Aima. The function was attended by well known writers, scholars students and faculty members of English Department of Central University, Jammu.
Prof Deep Shika Kotwal head of English Department CUJ read the welcome address. While introducing the author Prof Kotwal said that the Final Frontier was a poignant collection of poems or dialogues between mother and son which reflect the intimacy of a son towards his mother and also reflect the tragic circumstances of a mother not been able to communicate with her son because she is debilitated by disease from which she does not come out.
Two papers were presented on the book. Prof H L Misri in his paper termed the Final Frontier as an eye opener for the society and said that the dialogues in the book are a new addition to literature. While quoting from the book he pointed to the deep sense of pathos in the dialogues. Dr Kulbushan Razdan in his speech detailed the dialogues in its entirety and said that they were histariographic meta poetry.
The author Dr K L Chowdhary while reflecting upon the backdrop of his book The Final Frontier which according to author was the intense experience of seeing his mother once full of verve and life gradually losing out to old age, disease and fracture. He lamented that the exile of the Pandit community from Kashmir has denied their elders even to die in their original homes. He hoped that the book will inspire people to become more alive to old age care and equip themselves better with its manifold challenges.
In his presidential remarks Prof Ashok Aima Vice Chancellor of CUJ said that the book is an eye opener and breaks new ground in understanding challenges and resultant peace and satisfaction while nursing our elders.
Dr KL Chowdhary Award for excellence in care giving to role models who as unsung heroes left no stone unturned to tend their sick parents for years together despite their limited resources. These awards were given by chief guest to four care giving role models including Opinder Sus, Maharaj Krishen Pandit, Asha Bhat and Neenu Ganjoo who according to Dr Chowdhary left nothing to chance in taking care of their sick parents over many years.
Many scholars and students took part in an interface with the author. The programme was conducted by Pradeep Kaul and Sanjay Dhar presented vote of thanks.
The Final Frontier is about life, post death adjustments of care givers. It is about life in its entirety and above all about the challenging problems of ageing and how to tackle it.
