Udhampur, Poonch lift U-17, U-14 volleyball titles

JAMMU, Oct 19: Referring to a famous quotation ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’, the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Pardeep Gupta stressed upon the budding sportspersons to take part in games and sports for all round development of personality.
Gupta said this during a valedictory function of Divisional Level Inter-District Under-14 and Under-17 Volleyball Championship at Youth Hostel Nagrota Ground, here today.
The Divisional Commissioner said that sports and games apart from infusing disciplines and team spirit among the players, help them to achieve the traits like devotion, dedication and determination, which in turn make them to achieve goals.
He further said that despite his busy schedule, he loves to be the part of sports functions as he himself was a sportsperson.
Mr Gupta was accompanied by ID Soni, State Commissioner Bharat Scouts and Guides, MM Joshi, retired Wing Commander and Ranjeet Kalra, Chairman Media Committee JKCA as guests of honour.
Earlier, in Under-17 boys volleyball finals, Udhampur thrashed Jammu in straight three sets (3-0) by (25-21, 25-23, 25-20). In the Under-17 boys semifinals, Udhampur defeated Poonch in two straight sets (2-0) by (25-16, 25-16) and Jammu also trounced Kathua in straight sets (2-0) by (25-16, 25-23).
Meanwhile, in the Under-14 boys final, Poonch trounced Ramban by two sets to one (2-1) to lift the title. The final scores read (22-25, 25-15, 25-16). In semifinal clashes of Under-14 boys, Poonch trounced Rajouri by (2-0) and Ramban registered a win over Reasi also by (2-0) sets.
The Divisional Commissioner alongwith other dignitaries distributed prizes among the winners and runners up teams on the occasion.
Earlier, ID Soni, State Commissioner Bharat Scouts and Guides while speaking on the occasion said that to be a winner is always fine, but the real winner is he who plays the game with sporting spirit.
Deputy Director Youth Services and Sports, Ashok Kumar under whose chairmanship the tournament was being held also spoke on the occasion and said that sports serve for delight, for ornament, for ability and for agility. He also gave a brief report of the activities done by the department so far in the season.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Tirath Ram, District Youth Services and Sports Officer, Jammu, who was also organizing Secretary of the Tournament, Advocate Ahtshamudin and ZPEOs Sarita Pandha, Manorama Sharma, Pushpa Sharma, Jeet Singh, Sher Singh, Rajesh Vaid (retired) and PEMs Jaswant Singh and Veena Tickoo.
