Power crisis has deepened in Jammu beyond proportions. Now that the summer heat is at its height and the mercury has shot to 45 degrees, it is unbelievable that the citizens have to go without electric power for hours at end.PDD’s claim that it has regulated the power tripping scheduled is only a hollow slogan. The worst is that with power shortage, water crisis has also developed simultaneously in the city. When there is no power, water is not lifted to overhead tanks. A large number of localities in Jammu City are reeling under powerless days and nights with the added worry of lack of water supply.
PDD authorities are bringing the onus to the doorsteps of the people saying that they are not disclosing the load and utilizing the electricity more than the load disclosed by them. But the consumers accuse the PDD and Government for having no concrete policy to tide over the crisis and provide respite to people from increasing power cuts. This process of allegations and counter allegations is meaningless because the fact is that there is not sufficient power to supply it to the consumers. It is not only this summer that we are faced with sweltering heat in Jammu. All summers are sweltering. The question is that laying new transmission lines and adding more transformers and grids has not so far resolved the power crisis. How come we are suddenly under a spell of no power and no water? The crisis is assuming more dimensions with the passing of each day. There have been public demonstrations against the PDD at various places in the city especially the areas of Janipur, Durga Nagar, Roop Nagar belt. For a long time PDD harped on power theft and transmission problems as the main obstacles in providing regular electricity supply for domestic purposes. New cable has been laid and meters have been fixed on the poles. Despite that we are now face to face with power crisis.
